Dare to Dream
As someone who dreams big, I am limited by my own vision. I admire those who can see and communicate the future with great clarity. It just so happens that is not my gift. It sounds a little ironic to be in the business of renovating and designing houses and dreaming up developments but admit I am limited by my own vision. Yet, that is my reality and I have discovered many have the same limitation.
It would be easy to use it as an excuse that keeps us from trying to achieve big things. A mind set of “I should stay in my lane, keep my job and let the “gifted” people do the things that I dream about.” These are all thoughts that have weighed me down, sometimes more than others.
As we embark on our biggest project to date, the weight has been particularly heavy, with the reality of defeat looming larger than normal and the stakes being higher than ever before. Knowing the range of emotion and stress that comes along with such a big decision, I thought this would be a good project to chronicle and answer the questions that have been asked many times, such as:
- How do we decide what to build? What should it look like?
- Why take the risk?
- Is there a secret question and answer that makes us know we are making the right decision?
- How do we know if people will want what we build?
- Do people really want to live downtown? If so, who?
- Can we afford it? Will it be profitable? Will investors think we are crazy? Why in the world would a bank intrust us with so much money?
- What will happen if it fails? What does it mean for our family, reputation, the neighborhood, etc.
I will attempt to answer these questions, along with others as we push forward with our latest downtown living project, The Dechiro (duh-care-oh). Over a series of posts, I will share with you where the idea came from and the motivation behind it, all the way through the realization of the dream of having people live in the lofts and work out of the office and retail space.
